Brenda Penninx is professor and vice-chair at the psychiatry department of Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc. She is an international expert in cross-disciplinary mental health research integrating psychiatry, psychology, neuroimaging, genomics, psychoneuroendocrinology, sociology and behavioural medicine. Penninx is principal investigator of the multi-site, longitudinal Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (, and co-initiated the MARIO study that follows high-risk children and young adults in their stress and psychopathology patterns during life ( Penninx has supervised over 50 PhD-students, published over 800 scientific papers, is member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), of which she currently serves as vice-President.
